Project Overview

Background

WC Evans & Sons Ltd were appointed by the London Borough of Lambeth to deliver a prestigious public realm improvement project at the Robson Road entrance to West Norwood Cemetery. The objective was to create a new gated entrance that would improve accessibility for visitors while enhancing the appearance and functionality of this important heritage site.

The project involved creating a new opening through the existing listed boundary wall, together with the construction of a new stonework surround and resin bound pathway.

Solution Provided

This complex project required careful planning and close collaboration with all stakeholders due to the sensitive nature of the site and the challenging scope of works. Prior to construction, incoming UK Power Networks (UKPN) supplies serving the cemetery chapels were successfully relocated, enabling the new entrance works to proceed safely.

WC Evans & Sons Ltd also carried out extensive ground reduction works and landscaping before constructing the new entrance, ensuring it blended sympathetically with the character of the existing listed boundary wall.

The completed scheme has significantly improved accessibility to the cemetery while preserving the site’s historic setting, providing visitors and the local community with a welcoming new entrance for years to come.
